Bridging To The Arts:
Arts From Water's Edge
In the summer of 2000, ten summer sites for children around New Mexico participated
in an investigative arts process focusing upon the theme of 'water's edge'. Differing
geographically from the red cliff shorelines of long lost oceans in the western plains,
the tributary banks in the Sangre de Cristos, the recently scorched forest edges of the
Sacramento Mountains, and the thirsty exit from New Mexico of the Rio Grande, these sites
all have in common the willingness to collectively and creatively explore a common theme
while finding ways to share their works in progress.
Developed as a joint project between the New Mexico Museum, the New Mexico State Department of
Education, and TANF, the federally supported Welfare to Work Initiative, Building a Bridge
to the Arts is an experiential pilot project integrating the creative arts into summer
and after-school programs serving TANF recipients, while finding methods for
collaboratively sharing the emergent arts process. Participating sites are able to pay
for some of the materials and include local artisans and craftspeople in the exploration
of the theme 'Arts from Water's Edge'.
These pages represent some of the explorations taking place around the state.
